Nrithyashala was founded in 1986 and is directed by Mrs. Janaki Sivaraman in Baltimore, MD. Nrithyashala serves the community, spreading awareness of the Indian culture, preserving the classical Indian art form of Bharatanatyam, and passing on this divine art to future generations. The dancers strive for perfection and perform extensively throughout the US. Several dancers have received awards and scholarships from prestigious organizations including the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts and the Maryland Distinguished Scholar in the Arts. After years of training, the dancers continue to stay connected with and appreciate their cultural and traditional roots. Many have gone on to perform on collegiate teams and taken leadership positions like president, captain, and choreographer. The guru, Mrs. Janaki Sivaraman is today recognized as an excellent choreographer as well as an able and committed teacher.
